What Does 1 Corinthians 13:8 Mean?

Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

1 Corinthians 13:8(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Unlike the gifts of the Spirit which are only temporary, the fruit of the Spirit is everlasting - for love never fails. Unlike the spiritual gifts of prophecy, tongues, and knowledge which will pass away and cease forever, the spiritual fruit of love is eternal - for love never fails.

How the immature carnal Christians of Corinth valued the things that were passing away at the expense of the things that last forever, and what a lesson for us to learn in an age where so many are seeking after His gifts in preference to the Giver.

The argument rages on whether or not certain spiritual gifts ceased in apostolic times, after the Holy Spirit of God had moved His appointed apostles and prophets to complete the God-breathed, New Testament canon of Scripture.

However, whether the gifts of prophecy, tongues, and knowledge ceased in those early days of the Church or not, they will one day fail once and for all in the eternal state, for the Bible tells us: "If there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away. If there are tongues, they will cease. If there is knowledge, it will pass away."

Let us value the Giver rather than the gift, and seek to know HIM more and more, for God is love and love never fails, in this world or in the ages to come.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, I pray that I may know You more and more and be transformed into the image and likeness of the Lord Jesus. May I love others as He has loved me, to Your praise and glory, for ever and ever, AMEN.
