What Does 1 Corinthians 2:13 Mean?

which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

1 Corinthians 2:13(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Paul did not teach the wisdom of the age. He did not speak a message that emanated from human wisdom. Paul spoke out God's secret wisdom which had been hidden for ages and generations but has now been revealed to all who have trusted Christ for salvation. This wisdom from above is recorded in the Holy Scriptures and is freely available to whosoever will take the time and effort to seek it out.

God has revealed His wisdom to us by His Holy Spirit. Indeed, all who are born from above have the permanently indwelling Holy Spirit of God within their heart and He is the One Who searches the deep things of God and reveals them to us - through the God-breathed Scriptures.

God's wisdom is not available to unbelievers and is also hidden from the angelic rulers of this age, for had they understood the incredible saving power of the Cross to redeem humanity - by grace through faith in the death, burial, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory!

And so Paul explains that the things about which he is speaking, have not been dreamed up through man's imagination. They have not been taught through human wisdom. It has not been discovered through the spirit of this world and it cannot be obtained by secret societies or any mystical incantation. The truth that Paul is teaching has come through the Spirit of God Who combines spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

Before Christ was crucified, He told his apostles that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things and guide us into all truth. However, we should not fall into the trap of assuming that there is ongoing, extra-biblical revelation taking place today, as some like to suggest. The foundation of our faith was laid by the holy apostles and prophets of God and is recorded for us all in the completed Word of God. The Word of truth is contained within the completed canon of Scripture.

Paul was God's appointed apostle to the Gentiles and the message of salvation that he proclaims in his epistles did not originate from man, but from God. Spiritual truth is not acquired through any approach other than by direct revelation to God's holy apostles and prophets, which is recorded for our learning in the holy Scriptures.

The Bible must remain our singular plumb-line for spiritual truth... for when we deviate from the truth of the Word of God, we are on the downward road to substituting man's flawed wisdom for the perfect wisdom of our Almighty Creator and Heavenly Lord.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom from above and for the inspired Word of God which contains all we need for life and godliness. Thank You for the indwelling Holy Spirit Who continues to guide us into all truth as we study the Scriptures and submit to His leading and guidance. Thank You in Jesus' name, AMEN.
