Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;

 1 Corinthians 2:6 (NASB)

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

The focus of Paul’s teaching was Jesus Christ and Him crucified. It was not using any persuasive words or relying  on human wisdom, that motivated Paul in his ministry.. nor was it his eloquent preaching style, that exposed Paul’s inner strength and godly wisdom.

His unswerving dedication to preach the pure gospel of God, in spirit and truth.. was a demonstration of the indwelling Holy Spirit, working powerfully in a consecrated life.. so that the excellency of the power, and the glory of the message he shared, may be of God, and not from man.

It was the message of the cross, that made men’s hearts burn within them, and caused condemned sinners to be declared righteous saints. It was the truth of the glorious gospel of grace.. that caused lost sinners to be convicted of sin, and converted to Christ. It is the message of the cross, and not the man who delivers the message, that it is the power of God unto salvation for all who believe.

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those of us who are being sanctified, it is the very power and wisdom of God. To those who are being sanctified by grace through faith in Christ, and are maturing in the faith.. the message that Paul delivered, is heavenly wisdom, that surpasses our understanding

For this reason Paul was able clarify to the confused Corinthians, who had started to be influenced by worldly wisdom – that the message that HE spoke was the only true wisdom – but it was a wisdom that can only be assimilated, by those who are growing in grace and maturing in the faith.

Only the ears of saved saints are able to hear and understand the heavenly wisdom that Paul was commissioned to share – but to the unsaved, who remain entrenched.. in the satanic wisdom of this age, his message becomes a meaningless mystery – and indeed, God ordained it to be so.

How important that our faith is not founded on the sinking sands of this world’s vain philosophies. How vital that our hope does not stand on the wisdom of men. How essential that our faith is anchored to the wisdom, the power, the promises and the faithfulness of God – Who deserves our undying honour and grateful thanks.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for opening my understanding to the message of the cross, which is the power on which my faith is founded – through Christ Jesus my Saviour. Thank You that You have opened my understanding to the truth of the glorious gospel of grace. I pray that many, who are dead in sin and deceived by the vain philosophies of this world.. would be convicted of their sin and converted to faith in Christ.. our God and Saviour – in Whose name we pray, AMEN
