What Does 1 Timothy 2:5 Mean?

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

1 Timothy 2:5(NASB)

Verse of the Day

We live in a pluralistic, pagan society, where all roads lead to God! All truth has become relative, and every tree is hailed as a god to be hugged! We live in a world that has turned its back on the One True Creator God; a world that is embracing any foolish philosophy of man that takes their fancy; a world that has succumbed to the spiritual deception of satanic forces in high places.

We have become a race that has twisted every truth in the Word of God and embraced a myriad of false deities, after which fallen men are lusting. But there is one God and not a multiplicity of gods dreamed up by man’s foolish, fallen imagination. "There is one God," Paul reminds Timothy, "There is one God and one Mediator also between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus."

There is, indeed, one God Who is sovereign, righteous, eternal, immutable, omniscient, and omnipotent... and He is invisible because God is Spirit. Yet in His wisdom, God has revealed that He is three distinct Persons - God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit... and because God is united in purpose and character, God is ONE. He is consubstantial, co-eternal, coessential. While God is one in substance, essence, and divine nature, each member of the triune Godhead is a Person. Each member of the Trinity is one substance - with the exact essence and the indivisible intrinsic nature of entire deity.

And God has given an unfolding revelation of Himself. He has identified His singular authority in the universe and He has revealed His immutability in His Word. And God has given us a final and full revelation of Himself when the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us. The immortal, invisible God revealed Himself to mankind in the lovely person and face of the Lord Jesus Christ.

God is ONE, which is why the Lord Jesus was able to say to His disciples, "I and the Father are ONE." God, the Son, was born into the very race that He created, in the beginning. He came from the Father to reveal the essential character and substance of God. He came to reveal God's glorious character and perfect plan of redemption to mankind. He came as the Son of Man to display the goodness of God and to die on the Cross for the sin of the world so that He could rise as the firstborn from the dead and become the one Mediator between God and men.

Although Jesus was fully God in power and essence, He set aside His glory and came to earth as a man to live a perfect life in order to demonstrate how God designed man to live on earth - in perfect submission to the Father's will. Jesus is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of God's nature, Who upholds all things by the word of His power. He made purification of sins through the sacrifice of Himself so that he could be God's representative to man.

Jesus was willing to become man's Kinsman-Redeemer so that He was equipped to be the one and ONLY Mediator between man and God: "No one comes to the Father except through Me," were the words Jesus spoke to His disciples. Every man and woman, every boy and girl, every saint and sinner, every prophet and priest, every prince and king have sinned, for ALL have sinned. ALL fall short of the glory of God. ALL need a Saviour Who will mediate between God and man and the Bible clearly tells us that there is only one Mediator between God and man - the Man, Christ Jesus.

Christ is the single intermediary and singular Mediator between God and man. Some see this as exclusive, and indeed it is, for there is no other name given under heaven by which we must be saved. But it also demonstrates God’s wisdom and grace, for He did not give multiple ways to return into fellowship with Himself, but one, simple, childlike way: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved."

God did not make it difficult for man to come to Him. The Lord made the way of salvation so simple that even a little child could understand. Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again so that whosoever believes on HIM will not perish but have everlasting life.

"No one comes to the Father but by Me," were the words of Christ to a lost race of sinners, for He is the Word of God Who was made flesh and was chosen to be the one intermediary, the singular intercessor, the sole adjudicator, the only Mediator between God and man. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory – glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

My Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for making salvation so simple. I confess that sometimes I complicate Your amazing gift of salvation, which is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, the only Mediator between God and man. I pray that many will come to a saving faith in You today. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
