What Does Acts 17:11 Mean?

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Acts 17:11(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Pastors in churches today, often encourage their congregations to: "Be like the Bereans." Paul writes of the Bereans' response to his gospel message: "They received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."

It is noble and wise to diligently search the Scriptures day by day and to carefully examine all that you are being taught by teachers and preachers, to ensure that you are not been fed a distorted doctrine, a twisted truth or 'another Jesus'.

The Bereans were commended for this noble-minded trait in their character, for the more you gaze at the mirror of God's truth, the greater will be your ability to discriminate between the true gospel and a perverted reflection.

It is not sufficient to have a passing acquaintance with the Word of God. It is not enough to know the Bible second hand. The one who, in eager expectation, searches the Scriptures and examines its content daily, with a deep desire to know the truth, will be guided by the Holy Spirit into all truth: "And you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free."

And because of the Berean's diligence in searching the Scriptures after receiving Paul's message, many people were saved: "As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men."

God has concealed precious promises and truths in the Bible that are only uncovered by searching the Scriptures, meditating on the Word, and following the leading of the Holy Spirit. And Proverbs tells us that it is the honour of kings to search out those things that God has concealed.

Let us follow the example of the noble-minded Bereans, and search out and scrutinise the Scriptures daily, to see if the things that we have been taught are so. And may this result in a deepening of our faith, and that those around us would hear and believe.

My Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for Your Word of truth and all that it contains. Help me to be a good steward of the Scriptures as I search its pages daily. Teach me all that You would have me learn, and guide me into all truth, I pray. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
