What Does Acts 17:28 Mean?

for in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.'

Acts 17:28(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Paul was opposing two ideologies when he challenged the men of Athens to consider their philosophy. All were atheistic, with some who hotly pursued the pleasures of life through sensual experience, whilst others favoured personal discipline and self-control, desiring to search out the truth. But whether their focus was on pleasure or discipline, all had their roots in pagan thought, and all were dead in their sins. The former enjoyed life without reference to God while the latter endured life estranged from God, but both world-views were fanned by the flames of pride.

Paul came to show them the true and living way: how to enter life; abundant life; eternal life.

He came to tell them about the one and only God, Maker of heaven and earth Who is never far from any of His creation. Paul introduced to these lost and prideful men the God of creation, the God of history, the God of geography, the God of language, the God who breathed His own life-breath into man. He even quoted from their own philosophical writings: "For in Him we live, and move, and have our being, for we are His offspring."

Though made in the image of God we, like the Athenians, have to choose whether to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh and only begotten Son of God. We have to choose to place our trust in the crucified, risen, and ascended Redeemer or choose not to place our trust in Him.

For though we are all made in the image and likeness of God through Adam, it is only by the shed blood of Christ Jesus our Saviour, that our sins are washed away. And all we need to do to have our sins washed away is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are my God and my Saviour. Lord, without You I can do nothing, for in You I live, and move, and have my being. Use my life to glorify You, and thank You, Father, for sending the Lord Jesus to suffer and die so that I might live. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
