And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

Genesis is the foundational book in the Word of God upon which God’s revelation to man is securely fastened. He simply tells us that: in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. In the beginning the eternal; omniscient; all-powerful triune-Godhead spoke something into being from nothing. God created time and space, mass and matter, and He anchored this unchangeable Truth in His immutable Word.

Before creation there was nothing but God. Before the beginning there was an infinite non-existence of matter and material. There were no angels; principalities or powers – there was only God. There were no atoms; no elementary particles; no molecules; no modules – no time and no space – no electrons and no quarks. There was no sound or smell; no heat or light – and no darkness. There was no color, no peace, no evil. There was nothing except the eternal, uncreated, immutable and perfect Godhead.

And then in the beginning God spoke and it was so. God moved and it came into being.. for in the beginning God created the ‘time-space-matter’ continuum. And the earth was without form, and the earth was void. The earth was empty, and the earth was uninhabited. The earth had yet to be formed, fashioned and filled with all that was good:  and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

But God did not intend that His unformed, uninhabited creation should remain empty and unpopulated. God’s creation was not to remain unoccupied and unfilled for God had determined to make man in His own image and likeness to have dominion over all that God would make – and so God created man to be the federal head of His created world.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth and the earth was without from and void and darkness was on the face of the deep – but God’s creation was to be fruitful and multiply – and so the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, and step by step God brought shape and structure to His creation.. as by His will and power He formed and fashioned all that He made, and He saw that it was very good.

Like the artist with his blank canvas and box of paints or the composer with his empty score and well-sharpened pencil, the Master of the universe began to form and to fashion His creation by the Word of His mouth as the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.

God began to fill that which was empty. He divided and separated light from darkness, day from night – land from sea and morning from evening. He flung stars into space and skillfully formed and fashioned flora and fauna – and life began to stream into the once empty void – so that the air was filled with great flocks of flying birds, the land swarmed with all kinds of of living creatures and the waters teemed with all sorts of aquatic life.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for You are our creator God Who made the heavens and earth to be inhabited, and filled them with such richness and beauty. Thank You for Your immutable word and the truths that it contains and thank You for my salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, by Whom all things were made and in Whom we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Your perfect will, in Jesus name I pray, AMEN
