What Does Genesis 2:18 Mean?

Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."

Genesis 2:18(NASB)

Verse of the Day

What a beautiful picture we have of the first man who was so carefully constructed by God from the dust of the earth (that the Lord Himself had created). And having formed and fashioned the man that He had made, God breathed His own breath of life in to Adam's lifeless form, and Adam became a living being, made in the image and likeness of God with a mind to think, emotions to feel, and a will to make freewill choices.

Adam was created to be God's representative on earth and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that was on the earth. He named all the creatures that God had made, worked in the garden that God had provided, and enjoyed the beautiful environment that God had created.

But it was not good that the man whom God had created was to live alone, and despite his glorious surroundings, Adam recognised his own solitude. And so God made a suitable helper to share his life, a helpmeet that corresponded to Adam's needs, a woman that would compliment Adam's position of ruler in God's creation. And as his wife, she would be "bone of his bone, and flesh of his flesh."

She was to be his helper. She was to be all that Adam lacked in his loneliness, and together they would become one flesh and live together in loving unity. Together, they would abide in spiritual union. Together, they would be joined in a perfect marriage that was overseen by God for, from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female, man and wife to be united together, as one.

That is why a man will leave his father and mother, be united with his wife, and the two will become one flesh: "Therefore," we are told, "what God has joined together, man must never separate."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the heritage and privilege of marriage which You ordained between a man and his wife in the beautiful Garden of Eden, so long ago. Thank You for the individual gifts and complimentary abilities that have been endowed to both male and female so that they may live together in the bond of unity and love. Thank You for the wonderful way that, in Christ, the unique bond between husband and wife is established and perfected. And at a time when the world has proclaimed a war against the institution of marriage, I pray Your blessing on all Christian marriages, that they may be united together in love and peace, to Your praise and glory, AMEN.
