What Does Genesis 22:14 Mean?

Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, "In the mount of the LORD it will be provided."

Genesis 22:14(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Perhaps the most beautiful and poignant name of God is the one that the Lord gave to Abraham when he and his son Isaac were travelling to the place where God had called him to offer his beloved son as a sacrifice, in obedience to God's command: "Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, 'Father?' 'Yes, my son?' Abraham replied. 'The fire and wood are here,' Isaac said, 'but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?' Abraham answered, 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.' And the two of them went on together."

It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had already received God's promises by faith, was also ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead because by faith, he obeyed God's Word, even when circumstances seemed to scream the opposite: "So Abraham called that place Yahweh-Yireh - Jehovah-jireh - The Lord Will Provide."

"And to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.'"

What a beautiful yet shattering picture of God's only Begotten Son Who, like Isaac, was also to be led up that same hill on Mount Moriah, at a place called Calvary, and bound and nailed to a cross as the only perfect yet willing sacrifice, acceptable to a holy and righteous God as the full and finished payment for the sin of the whole world.

The Lord will indeed provide. If He loved you so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die to save you from your sins, will He not much more provide for the daily necessities of life, knowing that we have need of these things, also? Let us not be of little faith, but men and women that trust His Word implicitly, knowing that the Lord will indeed provide for all our needs, according to His riches in glory.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, what a wonderful God You are! I praise Your holy name for all Your goodness and loving kindness to me and all people, by sending Your only begotten Son to take the punishment that I deserve. Thank You that You continue to provide for my daily needs, my Father. Thank You that in Your graciousness, You provide for all Your children, according to Your own promise, Yahweh-Yireh (Jehovah-jireh), the Lord will provide. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
