What Does Genesis 6:9 Mean?

These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.

Genesis 6:9(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The widespread wickedness, sin, and intermarriage between the rebellious, angelic beings and their human counterparts... together with the shocking corruption and degeneracy that engulfed the whole antediluvian world, caused all humanity to be "only evil continuously."

It is no surprise that God purposed in His heart to destroy the entire race of man, which had become completely corrupted. It is understandable that God determined to wipe mankind from the face of the earth! But we discover a man called Noah who was blameless in the eyes of God, despite living in the midst of all the debauchery and degeneracy of that generation.

Scripture informs us that "Noah was a righteous man and blameless in his time, for Noah walked with God." The verse is sometimes translated, "Noah was a righteous man and perfect in his generations." Noah was called righteous because He 'walked with God' or 'trusted God', but he was 'perfect in his generations' because his genetic profile had not been contaminated by the fallen angelic beings who left their first estate, engaged in sexual acts with women, and produced genitally modified men which was an abomination in the eyes of God.

He was a descendent of Seth (through whom would be born the Seed of the woman), and he was also the great-grandson of the prophet Enoch (who walked with God). Like Seth, Enoch was one of Noah's forefathers, and this godly man did not see death because God 'took him' out of the increasingly corrupt earth.

As a descendent of Adam, Noah was a sinner who was born with an old sin nature that was at enmity with God. But Noah was also a man of faith who believed the Word of the Lord, and his faith was credited as righteousness. Noah was saved by grace - through faith in God.

Indeed, the very first time that Scripture mentions the word 'grace' is in connection with this man, Noah, who believed the Word of the Lord. Although God determined to wipe man from the earth, together will all the animals and birds, we read: "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord."

Noah found grace in God's eyes because he believed the Word of the Lord. Noah demonstrated his faith by obeying God's instructions to build an ark for the saving of his family. And so we read that Noah was 'a righteous man'. Noah was blameless in his time and walked with God because he was a sinner saved by grace. He was a man who walked with God, by faith. He was declared blameless in his time and was credited with righteousness - by grace through faith.

Noah was one of the two men whom the Bible records 'walked with God'. He is also mentioned in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11, for when Noah was warned by God about the conditions that were to befall the earth, he believed God before destruction was sent. Noah even began to warn his degenerate neighbours of the coming flood-waters of God's judgement on the world of the ungodly.

He trusted God's warning of terrible things to come, by faith, and reverently prepared an ark to save his family, at God's command. And so, by faith, Noah condemned the unbelieving world who mocked his message of hope and scorned his word of saving grace - and Noah was granted the righteousness that comes by faith.

Peter informs us that Noah not only demonstrated his faith in the Lord by building an ark, but he faithfully preached the message of salvation for 120 years. He bore witness of the approaching destruction. He warned the wicked people of the ancient world of the approaching judgement of God - but they refused to believe his warning and derided his preaching. As a result, God brought a devastating flood upon the whole world and the ungodly perished beneath the floodwaters.

Noah was not sinless, but he was declared righteous by God because he believed the Word of the Lord which is why we read: "This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time - and Noah walked with God."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful example of Noah who was a man who believed in You, trusted Your Word, obeyed Your instructions, warned the wicked of the consequences of sin - and found grace in Your eyes because of his faith, which was credited to him as righteousness. Thank You that I too have found grace in Your eyes and have been declared righteous. I pray that I may walk in spirit and truth and remain blameless in Your eyes. Help me to boldly proclaim the glorious gospel of grace to the lost, and may my life be a witness to Your goodness and grace and a warning of the wrath that is to come. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
