What Does Hebrews 13:6 Mean?

So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?"

Hebrews 13:6(ESV)

Verse of the Day

If only our faith were simpler and we were more childlike, we would take all that God says in the Scriptures and simply trust in His Word – and that's called FAITH! Faith is simply maintaining confidence in all God says. It is believing that His Word is true. It is trusting that the Lord will honour His pledges and promises.

In the previous verse, the Lord Himself promised, "I will never leave you, nor will I ever forsake you," and all Christ's promises are 'YES' and 'AMEN' in Him. Similarly, in the verses that follow we are reminded: "The Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Throughout the Word of God, we are continuously assured that the Lord will go ahead of us and lead us in the way we should go; that the truth of His Word is our shield and buckler; that He will cover us with His pinions, protect us from all evil, and that His Word can never be broken.

It is when we have come to that point where we simply trust in the truth of His Word and believe all that He has told us in Scripture, that the natural progression of every Christian should be to say with utter confidence, "THE LORD IS MY HELPER WHAT CAN MAN DO TO ME?" and to believe it to be true! When, by faith, we have such an assurance of the truth of God's Word, even when things appear to the contrary, we discover that life falls into its correct perspective.

In this verse, the writer to the Hebrews reaches back into the Old Testament to express the timeless truth in Psalm 118 that the Lord is faithful, His lovingkindness is everlasting, and because the Lord is for him, he has nothing to fear: "The Lord is for me. I will not fear. What can man do to me?" And the wonderful truth is that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus, and that His faithful to keep all His promises to us.

The character of the Lord Jesus and attributes of God are changeless: unalterable, immutable, indestructible, irrevocable, lasting, and one by one, the Word of God unveils the unchangeable nature of God and His faithfulness to His Word. And step-by-step, the book of Hebrews demonstrates the difference between a life of trusting faith and the one that lives in doubt and unbelief.

Hebrews alerts us to the many fleshly dangers, sinful temptations, and worldly appetites that can lure a believer away from a life of faithful discipleship into an attitude of discontent, greed, and a lack of brotherly love towards our fellow believers. It gives a series of warnings against unbelief, which comes from a hardened, rebellious heart as well as providing a portrait gallery of dear saints, whose faith we should emulate, for they simply trusted the word of the LORD and in the end, came forth as pure gold.

When the historical facts of Scripture, the immutable character of God, the great crowd of witnesses who lived a life of faith that was pleasing to the Lord, and our own experiences of God's grace are all combined, then we too should be able to confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, what can man do to me?"

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, what an amazing privilege to be able to say that You are my helper. You are for me and not against me. You have saved me, indwelled me, and are interceding for me right now. How can I ever thank You, precious Lord, for Your indescribable blessings to me? May I never fear mortal man or live to please man. May I live to please You every day of my life, to Your eternal praise and glory. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
