For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, (how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard)

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

Christ’s position of importance and authority is supreme. He is infinitely more significant than the angelic host, for He sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high and all the angels of God worship Him. Christ Jesus is the eternal Son of God and omnipotent Creator of the universe. He is judge of the whole world and the Firstborn from the dead – and His throne is established in heaven forever and ever.

Christ is the incarnate Word of God, Who was sent by the Father to become the Messiah of Israel and Saviour of the world, by means of His death burial and resurrection.. so that all who trust in Him for Salvation may enter into His promised rest. Christ Jesus is the visible image of the invisible, triune God, and although in times past God spoke in various ways through Moses and the prophets, in these last days God has clearly spoken to man through His Son, Whom He has appointed heir of all things.

How important therefore.. that we heed the somber warnings given to us by the writer to the Hebrews – that we consider Christ; listen to Him and give heed to all He has said. How critical that we pay close attention to all that we have heard from the Lord, so that we do not drift away from the glorious gospel of grace.

But today, as in the days of the early Church there is a huge interest in angels and an intense fascination with the ministry of the angelic host, which will often eclipse the vital message of salvation that God gave through His Son – for if we miss the true message of Christ we are likely to fall into apostasy or be enticed into false doctrine or legalist practices.

Jews in the early church were very proud that the Mosaic Law was given to them by God, through angels.. and we do not want to diminish the significance of God’s holy Law. But the perfect Law, which God gave to Moses for Israel.., can never save a sinner, but was God’s instrument to point to Christ, Who fulfilled the Law on our behalf.. The Law exposed sin, but it could never forgive sinners. But Christ took the just penalty for our transgression and disobedience, redeeming us from the curse of the Law.

Christ came into the world in order to do away with sin, once and for all.. by the sacrifice of Himself. And we need to pay special heed to the Word of God that we have received through both the pre-cross and post-cross ministry of Christ. He is the incarnate Word of God and we are to adhere to His heavenly message – for if the word spoken through angels, which was given to Moses at Mount Sinai, were of such importance and proved unalterable.. how much more should we pay attention to the saving message of Christ.

And if the perfect Law taught that every transgression and disobedience would receive the just penalty, of death – how vital that we listen to God’s final revelation in Christ, Who Himself paid that price on our account. If the perfect Law taught that the wages of sin is death, how important to pay close attention to the gospel of the grace, where the gift of God is eternal lift through Jesus Christ our Lord. How important that we do not drift away from the glorious gospel of grace – for if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation – after it was at the first spoken through the Lord Jesus Himself – and confirmed to us by those His holy apostles?

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus is Your full and final revelation to mankind, and that by grace through faith in Him we have salvation of the soul and life everlasting.. I pray that I will give earnest heed to all that He says and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, Who is the Author and Finisher of my faith. I pray that in the power of Your Holy Spirit I will not drift away from the truth of the glorious gospel of grace, but finish the race that has been set before me, to Your praise and glory – in Jesus name I pray, AMEN
