Moses was the mediator of the old but conditional covenant with Israel which was cut and confirmed through the spilt blood of the Passover lambs in Egypt. Christ is the Mediator of a new and better covenant, an unconditional covenant which was signed and sealed with His own precious blood. Jesus is the sacrificial Lamb of God, Who "takes away the sin of the world," and it was finished at Calvary.

The old covenant was based on an agreement between God and Israel, but the nation broke the covenant because they were incapable of attaining the perfect requirements of God's perfect Law which He had ordained to be a schoolmaster to point us all to Christ.

The new covenant however, is based on an agreement between the Father and the Son alone, and requires no participation on behalf of man. All we are required to do is to believe on the only begotten Son of God, by grace through faith, trusting in His redeeming work at Calvary.

Jeremiah the prophet, who was witness to the dispersion of the Jews into Babylon and who wept over the destruction of the holy city, was given a great and precious promise for the nation of Israel: the promise of a new and better covenant, an unconditional covenant where God declared, "I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." And all God's promises are 'yes' and 'amen' in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But we too, who once were dead in our trespasses and sin and far away from God, have been brought near by the precious blood of Christ. We are privileged to be ministers of this new and better covenant, not a covenant that is bound by the letter of the Law but of the Spirit.. for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life - by grace through faith in Christ our Saviour.

We who are members of the Church and living in this dispensation of grace are truly blessed, for we have been placed in union with Christ, made part of His Body, and we are spiritual partakers of this new and better covenant.

One day Israel will also rejoice as God's chosen, covenant people when they cry, "Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord," for God has promised His chosen people, Israel, "I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more."

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are my God of peace Who, through the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, has made eternal peace with all who trust in Him as Saviour. Thank You that my salvation does not depend on me trying to keep Your perfect Law but on Christ and His finished work on the Cross. For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes in Him. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
