How did the Bible become the Bible?

ANSWER

The word Canon means “rule” and addresses the question of what books should be included In the Bible. It must be understood that it was God and not man who placed In perfect order the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament. The early Church Fathers were never the deter miners of the Canon of Scripture but the discoverers of what God had Himself already canonized. As early as 130 AD, the early Church Father Irenaeus confirmed I the authenticity of the 27 New Testament books we~
have in our Bible today.

“In no sense was the authority of the canonical books contingent upon any church council. All the councils did was to give later, broader, & final recognition to I the fact that God had inspired the books, and the people of God had accepted them.” (Norman Geisler, Encyclopedia of I Christian Apologetics)
Later, there was pressure to add additional books to Scripture (the 15 Apocryphal books) but this was denied based on the following criteria:

1. The books were not written by a spokesperson for God, nor were many even eye witnesses to the events they were writing about.
2. The people of God did not accept the books as God’s Word at the time of their writing.
3. The books did not contain the power of God to I work miracles and to change people’s lives.
4. The books, at times, contradicted other parts of Scripture.

We can rest assured that_the Lord has protected and ~
perfectly preserved the B1bles we have in our hands today. May we take the time to read God’s Word.

I God, who at various ames and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son (Heb 1:1-2)

For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues at are wntten In this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book (Rev 22:18-19)
