What Does Isaiah 53:4 Mean?

Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

Isaiah 53:4(NASB)

Verse of the Day

Christ's sacrificial work on the Cross at Calvary, which includes His substitutionary death, burial, and Resurrection as laid out in Scripture, is the single most spectacular event that has ever taken place in time and into eternity - for by it, God opened up the way of salvation for whosoever will believe on the name of the only begotten Son of God. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

The Son of God came to earth to reclaim ruined sinners from a lost eternity and to provide a way back into fellowship with our Heavenly Father and all that is good and perfect and wholesome and holy. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

He bore rejections and ridicule on our account. He received scoffing and shame in our place. Through His shed lifeblood, our pardon for sin was secured and sealed, and life-everlasting was the gracious gift that we received - and all we had to do was to believe on His name. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

He was prepared to stand falsely accused and unjustly condemned to death, knowing that the sacrifice of His perfect sinless life was the only way that sinners who were justly condemned and deserved God's wrath could be pardoned, forgiven, and receive the remission of sins. For His sacrifice was the propitiation for all sin - God was satisfied with Christ's sacrifice on our account. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

We were guilty, lost, and dead in our sins and at enmity with God, and He was blameless and innocent and had enjoyed the glories of heaven from eternity past - and yet He was willing to be stripped of His glory. He was prepared to step down from His elevated position in the heavenly, spiritual realm. He was willing to be born into the race of man who, from the beginning, rebelled against Him. He received cruel stripes, humiliation, and death so that we might be forgiven of our sin by faith in Him and be redeemed from eternal separation from our Creator. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

His sacrifice freed us from having to pay the required death-penalty for our sin, and it also released us from enslavement to Satan, sin, and death. When Christ was lifted up on the Cross, He was made sin for us, by receiving the full weight of God's wrath against sin on our behalf so that by faith in His sacrificial death and glorious Resurrection, we might be made the righteousness of God in Him - through time and into eternity. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

He carried our griefs. He bore our sorrow and on our account, He had the full fury of God's wrath against sin poured out upon HIM as He hung on that Cross, 2000 years ago. He was smitten of God and grossly afflicted. He was pierced through for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities. The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and the whole punishment which should have been our punishment, was poured out on Him in fullest measure. BUT it procured our healing, by grace through faith. Hallelujah - what a Saviour!

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise and thank You that Christ was lifted up to die on the Cross to pay the price for my sin. I am as guilty of His death on the Cross as those that falsely accused Him and nailed Him there to die. I am equally to blame, and yet I praise and thank You that through faith in His sacrificial death and glorious Resurrection, I have been redeemed and forgiven of my sin. I praise You that His finished work was sufficient. Hallelujah! What a Saviour! Praise His holy name, AMEN.
