What Does Isaiah 53:5 Mean?

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:5(KJV)

Verse of the Day

For all of us who have trusted Christ as Saviour, these poignant words can pierce our own hearts as we begin to understand that the sinless Son of God was willingly afflicted, bruised, pierced, and crushed with wounds that we merit. He died a death that we deserve, as the burden of our sin was laid upon the sinless Son of Man, our Kinsman- Redeemer.

The Lord Jesus suffered cruel treatment and gave up His life willingly so that all who believe on Him might not perish but be given peace with God, and have His inner peace guarding our hearts: "For by His stripes we are healed," not a healing of the body, but an everlasting healing of the spirit and the forgiveness of sins.

By His death and Resurrection, the Lord Jesus paid the enormous price for our sins and broke the power of sin and death in our life forever, returning us into fellowship with the Father. We are accepted by God, because of Him.

Christ is appointed one day to sit on David's throne and reign as Israel's King of kings, but first He had to come as Israel's suffering Servant as prophesied of old. He had to come as a Man who was despised and rejected of men: "A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief."

Christ will one day return as Israel's Messiah once they cry out as a nation: "Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord," but first He had to be wounded for their transgressions. He also had to be wounded for our sins. He was bruised for their iniquity, and He was bruised for you and me as well.

And the chastisement of all our peace was laid upon Him - that day on Calvary's Cross.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that the Lord Jesus Christ was wounded for my transgressions and bore my sins in His body on the tree. Thank You that my guilt has been exchanged for peace with God and the peace of God now rests in my heart. Thank You that I have been forever released from the bondage of sin and death, and that by His stripes I have been healed, clothed in His righteousness, and made a child of God. Thank You that Christ Jesus is my Kinsman-Redeemer and the sinless Substitute for my sins which, by His death and Resurrection, have been flung as far as the east is from the west. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
