Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

Mary is a beautiful example of a woman who loved the Lord Jesus and who was loved by her Saviour. Although the Jewish leaders plotted how they might destroy Him, Mary was a devoted disciple who regularly worshipped at His feet, honored His presence in her home and drank deeply from the fountain of life.

The love and respect Mary had for Jesus caused her to anoint His feet with an extravagantly costly perfume, which she reverently wiped with her hair – so the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

The one who worships at the feet of the Lord Jesus, in spirit and truth is the one who carries with them some of the fragrant beauty of His person: (to those that despise the Lord it is an aroma of death but to those that love Him, it is a fragrance of life). May our lives be so immersed in Christ and so devoted to Him that we reflect His beauty in all we say and all we are – and may we bring to others the life-giving perfume that comes from Him alone.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, may I sit at Your feet and worship You with all that I am and all that I have – and may the beauty of Jesus become a life-giving fragrance of His love to all with whom I come in contact today, in Jesus name I pray, AMEN
