What Does John 14:24 Mean?

The one who doesn't love Me will not keep My words. The word that you hear is not Mine but is from the Father who sent Me.

John 14:24(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

It was decided in God's eternal council chambers, that the Son of God would come to earth and be born into the human race as God incarnate, and live the perfect life that God desires from all of us; a life that was empowered by the Holy Spirit, a life that was submitted to the will of the Father and not his own human will.

And so, the words that the Lord Jesus spoke were not from Himself but from the Father of love. Everything that He said and all that He did was commissioned by the Father, in order that we might know and love the Father through the Son. In this way, the Father would be glorified in Jesus.

Jesus came as the final and visible representation of God's love for humanity. He died and was resurrected so that we might live, but His love was despised and His words were rejected. And even though they may not have been aware of this fact, those that despised the love of Jesus and rejected His salvation, also despised and rejected His Father in heaven, for the words that Christ spoke were from the Father, and the life that He lived was directed by the Father.

Rejection of Jesus is an indirect rejection of God the Father, and the one that does not love the Lord Jesus and keep His Word is also one that does not love the Father nor keep His Word. This is because the words that came forth from the Son were commissioned by the Father Who sent Him.

No wonder as the Cross loomed ahead, Christ would say, "The one who does not love Me does not follow My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me."

My Prayer

Loving Lord, thank You for revealing the eternal God of love to humanity. Forgive me for the times when I have not loved You as I ought, nor been obedient to Your Word. Give me open ears to hear Your Word and a willing heart to love You more each day. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
