What Does John 17:10 Mean?

and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.

John 17:10(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The beautiful unity and cherished communion that we discover existing between the Father and the Son, cannot be better conveyed than through this simple sentence in this most magnificent of all prayers in John 17: "All things that are Mine are Yours, and all that are Yours are Mine."

The equality of the Son with our Heavenly Father is indisputable, for no created being, visible or invisible, whether on earth, under the earth, or in heavenly places has the consummate authority and ultimate right to express co-equality, co-existence, and co-eternality with Almighty God.

The intimacy between the Father and the Son is an unfathomable mystery and a magnificent truth that we cannot explain in human terms, but God's full and final revelation to mankind came in the Person of the incarnate Son of God, the Word made flesh Who is one with the Father in thought and mind, word and will, action and essence. And Christ only did what the Father told Him to do, giving us the perfect example of a sanctified life that was set apart unto God.

The sole aim in our life on earth is to glorify God through the Lord Jesus Christ and in consideration of all the faults and flaws of His apostles, what a joy to hear Christ words of commendation: "I am glorified in them," for if Christ was glorified in the lives of His imperfect disciples with their many failings and frailties, the Lord may also be glorified in our lives, if we will but listen to His voice and obey His commands.

Christ had given His chosen apostles His Word and sanctified them unto God. Christ had set apart this little group of men to be His witness to the world that Christ died for our sins, that He was buried, and on the third day rose from the dead so that all who believe on Him might not perish but be given His life and be conformed into His likeness through the process of sanctification.

Sanctification is not sinless perfection for the sinless Son of Man sanctified Himself unto God. Rather, just as Christ set His life apart unto God and only said and did those things that He heard from the Father, so we are to grow in grace day by day, only saying and doing those things that we hear from the indwelling Holy Spirit and through the study of His Word. In this way, we are increasingly separated from this world, unto our Father in heaven.

My Prayer

Dear Lord, thank You for this beautiful glimpse into the heart of God and the intimacy that exists between the Father and the Son. Thank You that You were glorified through Your chosen apostles as an example that all who are called and chosen may be used of You to glorify Your holy name. Use me, I pray, to be a witness to the world of Your goodness and grace, and may I be increasingly set apart unto You with every passing day, until it is not I, but Christ Who lives in me. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
