Thoughts on Today’s Verse

In the previous verse we read that Jesus did not commit Himself to the people.. He did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew what was in their hearts. Even though the crowds were following after Him excitedly and placing their confidence and trust in Him, because of the many mighty miracles they witnessed.. Jesus knew that this could never become a mutual trust. Jesus knew that He could not commit His life and His important ministry into their safe-keeping.. because He knew that the heart of man is not to be trusted.

Jesus Christ is the perfect example of a man who walked in spirit and truth. He was not flattered by their adoration.. for He did not rely on the praise of men.. but of GOD. Christ’s whole life was the perfect example of a man that only said and did those things that He heard from His Father in heaven, while at the same time.. demonstrating a depth of love for His fellow-man that is unsurpassed. No, Christ did not seek the wisdom and praise of fallen men but of God.

And so we read that Jesus did not need anyone to testify concerning man, because Jesus Himself knew what was hidden deep within the heart of all men. He could read their thoughts and knew the intention of their hearts. And so Jesus did not need men to testify about the morals and attributes of mankind. He did not need other people to teach Him about man… for He was their Creator. He had made them and knew all that was to know about man.

The psalmist reminds us that God knows each one of us intimately. He knows when we sit down and when we rise up. He understands our thought from afar off. He scrutinizes our paths and knows when we are lying down and waking up.. and He is intimately acquainted with all our ways.  God even knows what we are going to say before there is a word on our tongue. Indeed, the psalmist was correct when He stated:  behold, O Lord, You know it all.

Jesus does not need man to instruct Him about anything.. especially what is in the heart of a man. Jesus has full and complete knowledge of all things and everything, for He is the image of the invisible God.. the exact radiance of God’s glory and the unalterable representation of His nature.

Christ is not only the power of God but also the wisdom of God and He upholds all things by the word of His power and every characteristic and attribute of the eternal omniscient Father.. belongs equally to the Lord Jesus Christ –  for He is the eternal, incarnate Son of the Most High God – co-equal and co-eternal.

No surprise therefore that despite the praise and adoration of the surging multitude of people.. Jesus did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself already knew exactly what was in man.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, how amazing to realise that while I was still a sinner Christ died for me.. and that even when I was dead in trespasses and sins, at enmity with You and without hope in the world, You looked down on me in pity and mercy. Keep me low at the cross and broken before You. Help me to carry out Your will – not in my own fleshly strength but through Your sufficient grace. Prevent me from presumptuous thoughts and may I always and only do those things that are pleasing to You – not simply because You know every thought of my mind but out of a growing love and respect for the Person and Work of my Saviour, Jesus Christ, in Whose name I pray, AMEN
