What Does John 4:22 Mean?

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

John 4:22(KJV)

Verse of the Day

The Lord Jesus is the heavenly Man Who came to reveal the Father to a lost and dying world. The Lord Jesus is God incarnate Who set aside His heavenly glory to become humanities Kinsman-Redeemer.

The Lord Jesus is the Living Bread Who came down from heaven so that all who partake of His body would not perish but have everlasting life. He is the Living Water and Scripture reminds us that whoever believes in Him, will have streams of living water flowing from deep within.

Jesus could legitimately say to this Gentile woman, "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is of the Jews." Jesus was not only the almighty, omniscient God Who planned and purposed that salvation would be available to all by grace through faith in the Messiah of Israel, but prophets of old wrote that He would be born of the Seed of the woman Who would come through the nation of Israel, of the line of Judah, and the house of David.

Salvation is indeed from the Jews, for God foreordained that His only begotten Son would be born of a Jew, of the lineage and house of David. Salvation is indeed from the Lord, for God planned and purposed that His only begotten Son would be born as a Man, that His name would be called Jesus, and that He would save His people from their sins: "For there is no other name given under heaven whereby we must be saved."

This dear Gentile woman had a partial but limited understanding of the truth of God, the worship of God, and of God's great plan of salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Like this woman, those that take Scripture and distort it to fit in their own denominational leanings or partial understanding, and those that limited the truth of God's Word to comply in with their own finite knowledge or philosophical leanings, will find themselves in an equally sorry state.

We in this Church age have been given the fullest revelation of God plans and purposes for the nation of Israel, the Gentile nations, and for the Church, which is His Body. Let us worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Let us worship the Lord in spirit and truth. Let us worship the God who ordained from the beginning His glorious plan of man's salvation by grace through faith in the death, burial, and Resurrection of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Let us ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your revelation to man through the holy Scriptures and in the Person of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Thank You that we are living stones being built up into a dwelling place for the living God. Thank You that I am in Christ and He is in me. May I worship You in spirit and in truth and give to You the glory and honour that is due to Your name, AMEN.
