What Does John 6:68 Mean?

Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.

John 6:68(NASB)

Verse of the Day

On a number of occasions, the disciples were challenged to give an answer for what they thought about Jesus Christ. Early in His ministry, it was revealed to Peter by the Spirit of God, that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of the living God. But as time passed, Christ's teachings became increasingly challenging to the Jewish mindset. In His earthly ministry, Christ was only sent to Israel, but His true mission was to include the whole world.

Earlier in His ministry, He was recognised by many as the Messiah who had come from God to save His people and to set up His promised earthly kingdom. However as time progressed, there was talk of His death as His teachings became more provocative. There was the command to eat of His flesh and to drink of His blood, and many did not understand. The Jewish leaders started to plan ways to kill Him, and many of His disciples who did not understand, walked with Him no more.

It was in this increasing period of uncertainty when many followers left that the Lord Jesus asked the twelve, "Will you also go away?" Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life." Peter was right - there is nowhere else to go and nothing else that can satisfy the heart of a man or woman that is separated from God by sin. Christ's teaching was not difficult to understand, but it was certainly difficult to accept.

And still today, the teaching of Christianity is not difficult to understand, but it is difficult for many to accept. But faith in Christ is the one way and the only way to reach God. Trusting in Christ as Saviour is the only path to forgiveness of sin and the only key to His heavenly home. Believing on the Lord Jesus Christ is one and only road to righteousness, for He not only speaks the truth, but He is Truth "and He has the words of eternal life."

To the unbeliever, the challenge is, "What think ye of Christ?" But the challenge to every Christian comes when life throws difficulties in your path, when things happen that you simply do not understand, or when God's Word seems to conflict with your own built-up human perceptions. We are called to trust His Word in all things, for His Word is life and health and peace and hope, for He alone has the words of eternal life.

My Prayer

Loving Father, when I don't understand Your words, or when Your truth conflicts with my built-up perceptions, I pray that I will be willing to listen to Your voice and to trust Your Word, for You alone have the words of eternal life. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
