What Does John 9:5 Mean?

"While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."

John 9:5(NASB)

Verse of the Day

God is Light, and He is the Creator of light. He the Sustainer of light and Giver of light. He is the Light shining in the darkness, and He is the light of life. Only the incarnate God can authoritatively proclaim, "I am the Light of the world." Only He is able to lift the one that is dead in trespasses and sins out of deep darkness that has permeated man's soul. Only He can transfer the one that is dead in sin and engulfed in darkness into the brilliance of His marvellous light.

His light not only shines into our lives to guide our steps through the darkest pit-falls and the heavy gloom of this rebellious world-system, but His resplendent rays of holy light, cascade into our hearts and stream into our minds, like a cleansing flood, for He alone is the Well-spring of godly wisdom and the Fountain-head of all spiritual understanding. He alone is the perfect Illuminator of spiritual discernment.

No individual being, in heaven, on earth, or under the earth can lay claim to being the pure, unpolluted Light of all lights, for God alone is eternal Light, in Whom there is no darkness at all. He is the everlasting Light that gives life and hope to all. He is the eternal Son of the Father of lights, in Whom there can be no change or shifting shadow, for He remains the same unchanging and unchangeable Light of lights - yesterday, today and forever.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, and God in His grace, He gave His eternally beloved Son to be born into the human race as Jesus - the Root and Stem of Jesse. He alone has the right to be called the Light of the world, for He came into the world, to lighten the darkness of a world immersed in sin. He is the unique Son of Man, in Whom is eternal life, and that life was the Light of men, which shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overwhelm it.

When the Lord Jesus walked this earth, He was the Light of the world. He was the true Light from heaven. He was the Light that gives light to all who come into the world. He beamed the warmth of His Light and Love into the broken hearts of many. His healing Light radiated into the lives of those who were broken in body and disturbed in mind. He shone His redeeming Light into the hearts and lives of all who trust in His name for salvation.

During His sojourn on earth, His Light shone into the eyes of the blind, who received their sight. "LORD, That I may receive my sight", was the request of blind Bartimaeus, "Lord - that I may SEE." And the Light of the glorious gospel of grace shone into the hearts of many of His followers and the eyes of their hearts were illuminated eternally - and what joy must have flooded their souls when they received their spiritual sight.

Jesus reminded us that while He was on earth, He was the light of the world, but His light still shines in the darkness of this fallen globe for we, who have trusted Him for our salvation, have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light, and the Light of His radiance continues to be reflected out to lost souls through the witness of the Church. "YOU are the light of the world", He told His redeemed ones, for we are all members of His mystical Body. We are His representatives on earth.

In His loving-kindness, the Lord Jesus offers the light of His grace freely and abundantly to all who will turn to Him as their Son of righteousness. But light is not only given at the time of rebirth, its cleansing power and refining rays continue to shine into the deep recesses and secret corners of our minds, to expose those things that discredit His name, hinder our spiritual progress and disconnect us from our communion with our Heavenly Father.

God is Light - unapproachable Light, and yet He has placed His Spirit of Light into our hearts to lead us aright, to guide us into all truth and to shine His love into the hearts and lives of all with whom we come in contact.

Let us walk in the light as He is in the light and may the light of His presence within each of our hearts, shine through our lives to proclaim to all we meet, the light of the glorious gospel of grace that has been shed abroad in our hearts and lives.

My Prayer

Thank You, Father, for lifting me out of the kingdom of darkness into Your glorious kingdom of light. May the light of Your love and grace shine in and through me, and may I be used by You as a reflection of the true Light that lights all those that come into the world. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
