What Does Luke 1:32 Mean?

"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David;

Luke 1:32(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The birth of every baby is a wonderful miracle of life, but the birth of the Lord Jesus was the miracle of new life that had been planned by the Most High God in eternity past. The eternal, uncreated Son of God, Creator of heaven and earth, and second Person of the Triune Godhead Who upholds all things by the omnipotent power of His mighty hand, was to come to earth and to be born as a little tiny, vulnerable baby boy, in a prepared human body that was free from sin.

As the angel told the young virgin of her forthcoming pregnancy and that the baby that was to be conceived in her womb by the power of the Holy Spirit, her firstborn Son Who would spend nine months secretly hidden from the world in her womb, was God's only begotten Son, she was filled with wonderment and amazement and worshipped God. She accepted her astonishing commission without hesitation, acknowledging her own need of a Saviour, and though wonder must have flooded her soul that she had been chosen to bear the Messiah promised so long ago by the Most High God, she scarcely could have understood the significance of this unique child's birth.

The seed of the woman had been passed down the centuries of time from our first fallen mother, through Seth and Enoch, Noah and Abraham, Isaac and Judah, David and Nathan, and finally to Mary. She was to conceive and bear a Son Who would be great and would be called the Son of the Most High God. He would be despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He would live a perfect life, trusting His Father in submission to the Holy Spirit as an example of how unfallen man should live in a fallen world.

He would be falsely accused, cruelly beaten, and sentenced to be crucified on a Roman cross so that all that believe on Him would be given the wonderful miracle of His new life in Christ. LIFE that only comes through trusting Him as Saviour, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father, David.

Let us join in the wonderment of that moment, when Mary's Son, God's only begotten Son, was born as a baby into the world He created: "The Son of the Most High."

My Prayer

Loving Father, thank You for the wonderful miracle of new life in Christ, that could only come because You sent Him to be born and to die so that I may be reborn and live. Thank You that Jesus is coming again to fulfil all that You have promised. I scarce can take it in, but praise Your holy name, AMEN.
