What Does Luke 1:78 Mean?

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

Luke 1:78(KJV)

Verse of the Day

The glory of God had left the Temple and for centuries, the voice of the prophets had been silenced in Israel. But the Lord had not forgotten His people, for the day at last came when once again He spoke through the mouth of Zacharias who was to utter a prophecy that the promised kingdom of God, and salvation "through the long-awaited Messiah," was at last dawning.

It was through God's grace and love that the Light of salvation, which had been promised in the garden of Eden so long ago, was ready to pierce the deep darkness of the world. And so, through the tender mercy of our gracious God, the Light of His salvation was finally dawning.

Spiritual darkness had been the sorry state of Israel for many centuries, but at last the people who were walking in darkness were to see a great Light, and on those living in the land of the shadow of death, the radiance of God was at last dawning. And so Zacharias announced: "Because of the tender mercy of our God, His Light from on high has visited us - to shine its light on all those who live in deep darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace."

The reviving light of the knowledge of the glory of God can only be seen in the face of the Lord Jesus Christ, for He is the Dayspring from on high. He is history's unique Person. He is the Morning Light of God's grace. He is the reviving Light Who alone gives life and hope and peace and love.

Yes, Jesus Christ is the Morning-Star. He is the coming Son in Whom is Light and Life - eternal life - abundant life. And His Light and Life continues to be shed abroad through light of the glorious gospel of saving grace, to all who will believe on His name.

Let us who have been saved by grace through faith, continue to reflect the Light of Christ to all we meet. To a world walking in darkness, let us share the good news of the gospel, so that many may believe in Jesus and be saved.

Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life."

My Prayer

Dear loving Heavenly Father, how I praise Your glorious name for sending the Dayspring from heaven to be my Saviour and Lord, to be my Light in a world of darkness, and Life for all of us who trust in His name, AMEN.
