What Does Luke 22:19 Mean?

And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me."

Verse of the Day

The Lamb Who was slain from the foundation of the world, meekly stood before His disciples on this unique Passover of all Passovers, to proclaim: "This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." Year after year, ever since the miraculous exodus from Egypt, the people of Israel had taken a little innocent, spotless lamb and slain it on the altar of sacrifice before the God of Israel, as a picture of the promised Messiah Who was to come and save His people from their sins and offer His life as a ransom for the whole world. And now, so many years later, the body and blood of the Saviour was about to be spilt for the sins of humanity.

The staggering consequences of this poignant event was veiled from the eyes of the bewildered disciples, yet the eternal significance of this amazing, sacrificial action will reverberate down through the corridors of time, and throughout the eternal ages that are to come.

The Lord Jesus was the bread of life, the hidden manna that had been sent from heaven. He was to give His own life as a ransom for many. And as He broke the unleavened bread which represented His sinless body, and offered the cup which spoke of His lifeblood being poured out for every member of sinful humanity, it pictured His own precious body being broken on the Cross and His very lifeblood being poured out before God the Father as the only offering for sin, to pay the price for your sin and for mine.

As the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world stood meekly before His disciples on this unique Passover of all Passovers, He gave a simple command to His little band of followers, and to all who by believing on His name would be saved: "Do this in remembrance of Me."

Years and years after this 'last supper', we too have the privilege of heeding Jesus' words when we take communion together, in remembrance of Him: "For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes."

Jesus is coming again. Let us not forsake eating the bread and drinking the cup of communion in remembrance of Him until he comes again.

My Prayer

Loving Father, it is staggering to try to realise that God Himself took on mortal flesh - so that He could come and pay the price for my sin - so that I could be forgiven. It is indeed a thing of eternal wonderment that God should clothe Himself in human flesh to become the only possible sacrifice for sin. It is a thing of everlasting thanksgiving that Christ broke His body and spilt His life-blood so that by believing on His name, I might have everlasting life. For this, I praise Your name forever and ever, AMEN.
