What Does Luke 23:46 Mean?

And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He breathed His last.

Luke 23:46(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The precious beauty of this bloody scene is multiplied by the significance of the many wonders and beautiful words that accompany this amazing moment in the centre of time, space, and eternity. Heaven was hushed, and time stood still as the only begotten Son of God, as the perfect Son of Man, paid the price for the sin of the world.

Gracious forgiveness had been extended to whosoever would trust in His saving sacrifice, and a precious promise of paradise had been given to a lost sinner. Loving provision had been extended to the woman who bore Him, and He carried the weight of the world on His heart as He became sin for mankind so that lost sinners could become the righteousness of God in Him.

Every facet of the law had been fulfilled, every prophecy accomplished. The price for sin had been paid, and communion with the Father restored. Christ had finished the work He had come to do and had drained the cup of bitter woe, and so He entrusted His spirit into the hands of the Father.

He breathed out His human soul willingly as He dismissed His human spirit freely into divine care, leaving His bruised, battered body, the tent in which He had tabernacled for a season, to be buried in a borrowed tomb. His forgiveness was extended to us and a heavenly home is now our own precious promise of paradise.

He has committed to provide for all we need and to pour forth rivers of living water to sooth our thirsty souls as we become more like Him so that loving communion with Him may deepen and develop. And there is no need for death to overtake us before we say: "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit," for we are daily in His hands, and none can ever pluck us out of His keeping.

My Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, at times I am overwhelmed by Your love and grace toward me, that You should send Your only Son to die and experience death in my place. Thank You that I am safe in Your hands of love forever. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
