What Does Matthew 16:16 Mean?

Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Matthew 16:16(NASB)

Verse of the Day

What simple yet what profound words were uttered by Simon Peter in response to the question that Jesus asked His disciples: "Whom do YOU say that I AM?" This is the fundamental question that every man and woman born into the human race has to face at one time or another. Whom do YOU say Jesus Christ is? What think ye of Jesus of Nazareth?

There is of course only one correct answer, and every answer that conflicts with the truth of Who Jesus is - is the wrong answer. If we do not know the truth of Christ, we know a lie. If we do not believe the truth of Scripture, we believe a lie. What we believe about Jesus of Nazareth has eternal consequences in the lives of every man and woman born into the human race.

This is a non-negotiable, scriptural fact, and knowing God and trusting in the finished work of the true historical, scriptural Jesus Christ is life - eternal life - everlasting life - abundant life, for the Lord Jesus ALONE is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Cults, religionists, and unbelievers alike have their own perception of Who Jesus is, and without exception, every false gospel and cultish belief is rooted in a false understanding of Who the Lord Jesus Christ is. This in turn results in a twisted and distorted gospel.

The second person of the uncreated Godhead Who is equal in every respect with God, is the Lord Jesus Christ; the Son of God, given as Redeemer of the world, born of a virgin into the human race as fully Man, uniting the nature and characteristics of God with His human nature, yet without sin. Through His atoning work on the Cross, He paid the price for the sin of every person in the world so that all - yes, ALL who believe - ALL who trust in Jesus as Redeemer have eternal life.

The question each of us must answer is: Whom do YOU say Jesus is? What think ye of Jesus of Nazareth? The only response that should come from our lips, is that which Peter was inspired to cry out: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

My Prayer

Loving Father, thank You that You have drawn me with Your cords of love to know the Lord Jesus as my personal Saviour and heavenly Friend. I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, equal with the Father, and not created, and yet He chose to leave His heavenly dwelling to be born as a man, live a sinless life, and give Himself to be sacrificed on the Cross. Because of Jesus, I have eternal, abundant life. May my praise and thanksgiving ever rise to You, my Lord and my God. AMEN.
