Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name

Matthew 6:9 (HCSB)

Thoughts on Today’s Verse

There was something unique and so very special about the prayer-life of our Lord that it caused his disciples to ask, teach us to pray. They did not ask to be taught to teach or preach – to heal or to change water into wine – but their desire was to pray as Christ prayed and so they came to Him and said, Lord, teach us to pray.

Christ did not give them a 5-point lesson on the art of praying but a demonstration of the deep, deep love, honour and trust that the Son had for the Father and of the beautiful communication that flowed between them like the ebb and flow of waters, as they kiss the sand of the sea-shore. The unbroken love-communion between the triune Godhead became a live recital before the wide-eyed disciples, whose understanding of prayer had been restricted to the principles and practice of the Hebrew scriptures and priestly benedictions as exemplified throughout the old testament –much of which had deteriorated into vain repetition. But the intimacy with which the Lord Jesus addressed His Father must have been a cause of wonderment in the hearts of each of His followers.

Just as the women at the tomb were told He is My Father and your Father; My God and you God, so we, who have been born into His family; have access to His throne of grace and the authority to call Him, Abba. The throne of the Father is in heaven and earth is His footstool and yet His spirit has taken up residence within the heart of each of His children, so that when we pray we can gaze into His face and address Him as Father, my Father – our Father Who art in heaven.

The omniscient, omnipotent sovereign, eternal Creator of the universe is OUR Father – in heaven…. hallowed be His Name.

My Prayer

Loving Father, words are insufficient to express the awe and wonderment of being Your child. Thank You, my dear Father in heaven, in Jesus name I worship You, AMEN
