What Does Matthew 8:26 Mean?

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

Matthew 8:26(KJV)

Verse of the Day

Whether or not this was a satanic attack on the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ or simply one of the many violent storms for which the Sea of Galilee is noted, this was a tremendous and dangerous tempest. Even seasoned fishermen, like Peter and the sons of Zebedee, were terrified at its ferocity.

But the Lord Jesus was abiding in the Father and resting in His love, despite the ordeal that the little crew were facing, because the peace of God was secured in the heart of Christ. He rehearsed an unshakable faith in His Father and an utter dependence upon God in front of His terrified disciples.

Unlike Jonah, who was disobedient to the voice of God, this little group of men had followed their Lord's instruction to "cross to the other side of the lake," and yet despite their obedience, they were confronted with a killer storm.

Why would God allow bad things to happen to his obedient children? Well, God often uses impossible situations to demonstrate His sovereignty over every circumstance of our lives, if only we would take God at His Word, trust Him in all things, and depend upon Him entirely.

We are called to abide in Christ, to rest in His love, to depend upon Him in all situations, to give Him our concerns and worries no matter what tempestuous circumstances or dangerous situations we discover ourselves to be in.

Let us not be anxious about anything, but listen obediently to His voice. Let us trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. When we do this, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are my Sovereign Lord and that You are in control of every circumstance of my life, no matter how dangerous, terrifying, or impossible my position seems to be. Help me to daily abide in Christ, to rest in His love, and depend upon Him in every situation I find myself, giving over all my concerns and worries in the knowledge that nothing can swamp my life when Christ is my Captain and Lord. AMEN.
