What Does Proverbs 13:10 Mean?

Through insolence comes nothing but strife, But wisdom is with those who receive counsel.

Proverbs 13:10(NASB)

Verse of the Day

We are told that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in the same way, pride is a germ that disseminates into all kinds of sin and strife.

Pride can be displayed in many ways and is described by many words, such as arrogance, insolence, self-importance, and conceit. Pride is also displayed in boastings and bluster, condescension and contempt, superiority and swagger, vanity and immodesty.

It is pride and her many infectious daughters, that lure us into discord and dissension, wranglings and controversies, disharmony and disagreements, conflict and friction.

Many verses in the book of Proverbs warn of the destructive nature of pride, "The mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride," we are warned, and "the one who has pride in his heart is disgusting to the Lord." We have all been cautioned that, "pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall," and here in this verse, we are counselled that, "through insolence comes nothing but strife," and "pride gives birth to contention."

As fallen men, we are disposed towards prideful self-importance... and too often, arrogance and insolence are crouching at the door of our heart. But God in His grace, reminds us that wisdom is the beautiful counterbalance to insolence and conceit - which is so distasteful to the Lord.

The Bible teaches that, "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise both wisdom and instruction," and "those who hearken to wisdom shall dwell securely and in confident trust," and elsewhere we read that those who bind wisdom around their hearts, "shall be peaceful... and without fear or dread of evil."

In this verse, we discover the importance of a teachable spirit for we read that, "wisdom is with those who receive counsel," and "wisdom is gained by those who take advice."

The Bible is the Word of God which gives insight into God's heart and also instructs us on how to live godly lives in Christ Jesus. Let us take to heart all that the Lord is teaching us, as we read, mark, learn, inwardly digest, and apply God's Word in our lives - for in so doing we will not only be gaining wisdom from above... but honouring the Lord Who bought us, with His own blood.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the words of wisdom that are found in Scripture. Keep me from prideful insolence and destructive strife and teach me to walk in your way, to receive wisdom, and to be willing to learn from godly counsel. Help me to take to heart all that is written in Your Word, and enable me, in the power of the Spirit, to apply all that I learn in my everyday life so that I may not only be a good and faithful witness of Your love and grace, but be a member of Your Body that honours Your holy name. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
