What Does Proverbs 2:5 Mean?

then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 2:5(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

We are charged in many places to seek after wisdom and to ask the Lord for wisdom; to rejoice in wisdom and to get wisdom, for wisdom brings with it strength and shelter, help and hope. Indeed, Scripture often reminds us that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Reverencing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and that knowledge of the Holy One gives us understanding.

So how do we understand what the fear of the Lord is, and how do we discover the knowledge of God if this is the key to wisdom? In Proverbs 2, we are given all the answers that we need if we are to understanding the fear of the Lord and to discover the knowledge of God.

As children of God, we are to receive the Word of God and to treasure up the instructions that are contained within the Holy Scriptures. We are to listen closely to the words of wisdom that are contained within its pages and direct our hearts to understand and apply all that the Bible contains. We are to hunger after God's righteousness and to thirst for spiritual discernment. We are to cry out to know the Lord, to plead for His understanding, and to ensure that we have a teachable spirit.

We are to search for the wisdom of God within the Word of God, in the same way that one would seek out precious silver or eagerly search for hidden treasures. And IF you are prepared to obediently search out and humbly hearken to all that is contained within the Word of God, THEN you will understand the fear of the Lord, you will discover the knowledge of God, and you will gain precious wisdom.

We are all children of God, but the wisdom of God is conditional on trusting the Word of God. We need to pay attention to all that Scripture teaches us and incline our hearts to learn the truths contained within its pages and then by applying it in our lives. Paul puts it this way: "That I may know Christ."

Let us seek to know and love the Word of God so that we may come to a deeper knowledge and love for the Person of Christ: "In Whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

My Prayer

Loving Heavenly Father, help me to receive and pay attention to Your Word of wisdom so that I may know and understand You more. In You is all I need for life and living, and for this I praise Your holy name. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
