What Does Proverbs 4:5 Mean?

Get wisdom, get understanding; don't forget or turn away from the words of my mouth.

Proverbs 4:5(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

The wise words that are found in the book of Proverbs come as advice from the God-given wisdom of King Solomon to his son, and we would do well to take note of some of the pearls of grace and truth that are therein contained.

This short, simple little verse instructs us to "get wisdom and to gain understanding." We are to acquire wisdom and to develop good judgement, but we must be aware that there are two sorts of wisdom after which a believer can follow – the wisdom of man, which is folly in the eyes of the Lord, and the wisdom of God, which makes for godly living and a life that is pleasing to Him.

But the verse also warns us that having gained wisdom and knowledge, we must beware not to turn aside from the truth or stray from the godly path of righteousness. Having matured in our faith and having grown in our spiritual walk, we should never forget what we have learned, nor should we turn away from the fount of all knowledge or leave our first love, Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Christ is the wisdom of God, and He is also the power of God. When we gain Christ, we are walking in the way of truth and life and hope and peace. When we are part of Christ's Body, we have access to the fount of all wisdom and the well-spring of all knowledge.

To learn of the unsearchable wisdom and knowledge of Christ should be our life-time desire, and we should seek Him (Whom to know is life eternal), with our whole being. Never let us become so familiar with Christ that we lose the desire to know Him more, to turn our backs from Him, or to wander from the Way of wisdom and understanding – Whom to know is life eternal.

My Prayer

Loving Father, I long to know the Lord Jesus more and more, for in Him are all the riches of Your wisdom. Develop in me an insatiable desire to know Jesus more and more. In His name I pray, AMEN.
