What Does Psalm 11:4 Mean?

The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD'S throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.

Psalm 11:4(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The spirit and substance of the Psalms are as relevant today as when they were first penned three thousand years ago.

Throughout their writings we discover that despite a temptation to flee from the trials, tribulations and terrors of this broken world system.. and in spite of the many difficulties and dangers that are a part of our everyday lives - our confidence is in the Lord, for He cares for the afflicted and He refines the righteous in His mercy and grace. Let us never forget that the Lord brings righteous judgement upon wicked, evil men - He confounds their plans and catches them in their own nets.

Our strength is found in Him alone, for His grace is sufficient for every eventuality in our everyday lives. The Lord is faithful and true to the precepts and promises that He has made to those that trust in His holy name. The Word of God stands fast forever and His promises endure from one generation to the next.

The Lord is indeed in His holy temple and His throne is in the heavens. He sovereignly rules in the kingdom of men and His eye closely examine the acts and activities of all humanity. The Lord is not mocked by wicked and evil men and at the appointed time He will bring them into confusion and confound their nefarious plans - but those that trust in His holy name discover Him to be faithful, trustworthy, long-suffering and of great goodness.. those who hold fast to the truth of His Word rejoice because He is the only secure shelter from the storms of life.

David is the biblical example of a man after God's own heart, for despite his faults and failings he held fast to the truth of God's holy Word. Despite the pressure and pain that he endured during his earthly pilgrimage.. David knew that God has placed His Word even above His holy name.

Like us, David was faced with wars and violence, crimes and corruption, terrors and temptations, rejection and betrayals. Like David we too are faced with the possibility that the godly foundations upon which our nation and society were based are crumbling into disrepair - but when encouraged by the faint-hearted to flee from the advancing evil like a bird into the wilderness.. David could confidently reply: the LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD'S throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.

Let us follow in the footsteps of king David, who is discovered to be a man that lifted his eyes above the circumstances of life and placed his confidence in the Lord - for he knew that there is no safer refuge than to be under the shadow of the Almighty. The LORD is indeed in His holy temple. His throne is indeed fixed in heaven and His eyes indeed are watching and testing the children of men - for He refines and establishes the righteous but brings the evil man to naught.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, my confidence is in You alone. As I see the inevitable economic collapse, great political struggles, outrageous atrocities, national and international unrest and a move to outlaw all that is good and righteous, my eyes are fixed on You and my trust in in You - for You are my Defence and Defender, my Rock and my Fortress - and I trust in Your unfailing Word, in Jesus name I pray, AMEN.
