What Does Psalm 111:10 Mean?

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow His instructions have good insight. His praise endures forever.

Psalm 111:10(HCSB)

Verse of the Day

How the Psalmist loves to praise the holy and awesome name of Lord, and this is a psalm that bathes in the splendour and majesty of the great works of God's hand, the glories of His eternal righteousness, the faithfulness of His gracious provision, the power of His mighty hand, and the everlasting covenant which He has graciously made with His people, Israel. No wonder this cascade of praise concludes with the words: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever."

How we should take to heart the recommendation behind these words of wisdom and in humble submission bow our knee in reverence and awe of our gracious God. How we should raise our hearts and voices in praise and worship as we proclaim the wonders of His name, the splendour of His majesty, and the riches of His grace towards us who have been called His children.

The fear of the Lord is displayed in a reverential affection for God, and is the first principle in gaining godly wisdom and a good understanding of Who He is - Whom to know is life eternal. The fruit of a holy reverence for our Lord develops our deeper understanding of His beautiful attributes and eternal character and will burst forth into praise and thanksgiving, worship, and reverential love from those that fear Him. A reverential love for the Lord and a holy fear of our God also translates into willing obedience to God's will.

Practical godliness, a good understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ, and a heart that continuously rejoices in the Lord no matter what struggles we may be facing, is a test of our wisdom: "For the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever."

My Prayer

Loving Father, I praise Your glorious name and pray that You would increase my wisdom and understanding of all You are to me with every passing day, for I desire to do Your will in humble obedience to You, for You alone are worthy. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
