What Does Psalm 3:6 Mean?

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me round about.

Psalm 3:6(NASB)

Verse of the Day

King David was surrounded by many evils and a multitude of enemies. Times were becoming increasingly difficult and troubles were multiplying on every side. When David looked at the mountainous problems and tumultuous terrors that encircled him, his heart started to fail for fear of what was coming on the earth. However, after reflection, David wisely turned away from looking at life's problems and those that sought His destruction, and fixed his eyes on the Lord.

He looked away from the evils, enemies, troubles, and trials that surrounded him, and acknowledged that God is his shield and protector, for God alone is our defence and defender.

When brought to the brink of despair, David admitted that his confidence could only be in God, for His promises of protection will never fail. He is a faithful and gracious God Who will never disappoint His people and Who alone deserves our reverence and praise.

When his eyes were fixed on the Lord, this 'man-after-God's-own-heart' was able to confidently proclaim, "I call on the Lord and He hears me. I can lie down and sleep in safety, for the Lord sustains me - I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me, round about."

Like David, we live in a fallen, sinful world that is becoming darker with every passing day, but, like David, our confidence must be anchored in Christ our Saviour, for He alone is our shield and protection. He alone is our defence and defender.

We have not been given the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind - for we have the indwelling Holy Spirit of wisdom and understanding. We have God's Spirit of counsel, comfort, strength, and might. We have the indwelling Holy Spirit of knowledge and understanding Who has promised to guide us into all truth and pour into our hearts the peace that passes understanding.

We who have trusted Christ as our Saviour, have received the Holy Spirit of power by grace through faith in Christ. He has brought about our adoption into son-ship, and through Him we are enabled to cry, "Abba, Father," as we boldly approach the throne of grace, for mercy to find help in time of need.

When we are looking to Jesus, and when the eyes of our heart are firmly fixed upon Him, we have a confidence in the promises of His Word, for His Word is true and His promises stand fast for ever and ever.

Jesus reminded us: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. I will never leave you nor forsake you and lo I am with you always - even to the very end of the age."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, the increasing violence and wickedness in this world and the terrors that seem to increasingly stalk my path, have too often caused me to divert my attention onto my mounting problems, instead of looking to Jesus and trusting Your Word. Thank You that no matter what happens in this world, You have promised to be with me. You are my Provider and Protector, my Defence and Defender. Thank You for Your indwelling Holy Spirit and Your peace that passes understanding, where I can rest in Your love and praise Your holy name. And thank You that I have been brought into Your family, by grace through faith in Jesus. In His name I pray, AMEN.
