What Does Psalm 31:3 Mean?

For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me.

Psalm 31:3(NASB)

Verse of the Day

David knew about living a life full of difficulties. His was a life full of wars and rumours of wars, fleeing from the wrath of the increasingly evil king Saul, surrounded by enemies on every side. But in all the difficulties that David faced, he called on the name of the Lord, for David knew that there is no security and safety outside of Him. David put His trust in the Lord and prayed for God's continuing protection and support in all the difficulties and dangers that He faced – for David knew that God is our Rock of defence, and He alone is our very present help in time of trouble.

As David was surrounded by the accumulating difficulties in his life, he acknowledged God to be his portion and he prayed to the Lord to lead and to guide. Trust in the Lord is our portion too and prayer to the Lord is our privilege as well, for we know that in Christ we have a portion and privilege for we are His people and the sheep of His pasture – we are a new creation in Christ and He is our loving Heavenly Father.

But simply because we are God's children, we are not exempt from the difficulties and dangers that pursue us, and there is nothing in this fallen world that is capable of shielding us from the enemy who, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking whom he may devour. But in all things, like David, we have a God Who has undertaken to be with us in all the difficulties and distresses that rise up to overwhelm us, and He has given us His Word that His grace is sufficient - to the praise of His name.

Like David, we need to be men and women that delight ourselves in the Lord and meditate upon Him in our waking moments and during our times of rest, as well as throughout all the twists and turns of life so that when the storms of life whip-up around us we are not dismayed, but with David are able to claim, "You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake You will lead me and guide me,"

The wonderful thing is that when we trust Him as our Rock and submit to His leading, it is not only for our eternal benefit but it is also to the praise of His holy name.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are my Rock and Fortress, my strength and stay, and I rest in Your love. I ask that You lead and guide me through all the twists and turns of my life, and thank You that Your grace is sufficient for all that I face. In Christ's name I pray, AMEN.
