What Does Psalm 86:8 Mean?

There is no one like You among the gods, O Lord, Nor are there any works like Yours.

Psalm 86:8(NASB)

Verse of the Day

There are those that presume in their hearts to elevate themselves, and to become as little gods in their own blinded eyes and bloodied hearts, which are puffed up with pride. There are those that reject the true and living God, preferring to transfer their mindless worship onto other created life-forms, which in their foolish hearts are elevated into the status of a god.

But the Lord our God is One, and He alone is worthy to receive true worship, praise, honour, and glory, for He is unique in character, singular in integrity, distinct in graciousness, unparalleled in perfection, and eternal in power. The Lord our God is indeed One, for He is pre-eminent.

He alone deserves our most humble thanks and our most devoted praise. He uniquely demands our most steadfast heart and our most trusting obedience, for He alone is worthy and to Him belongs all the kingdom, the power, the wisdom, and the glory, both now and forever, amen.

It was David who penned this psalm, and after he had laid out his petition to the Lord and requested His mercy and grace, he acknowledged God's sovereign power among the nations and spoke of the time when the nations will know that God is the Lord; a time when every eye will see Him, every tongue will proclaim Him as Lord, and every knee and will bow down before Him and honour His holy name.

In this psalm, David cried out to the Lord in humility of heart. He humbly addressed God as his Lord and Maker a number of times, and was ready and willing to confess: "There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours." He cried out to the Lord in his distress for deliverance and was quick to recognise his own insufficiency and his desperate need of God.

He was ready to acknowledge his utter dependence upon His Maker and that God would answer the cry of His servant, not because of any righteousness act David may have carried out, but by God's grace alone: "You, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God," was David's earnest profession. "You are slow to anger and rich in faithful love and truth," was his honest declaration.

The fool has said in His heart there is no God, preferring to turn aside to the worship of false idols that are conjured up in mans' own unreasoned imagination. The fool identifies himself by giving reverence to angelic beings, rulers of the earth, and a plethora of equally false entities, but in this Psalm, David demonstrates his trust in the Lord, for he had discovered Him to be good and gracious.

David had proved that God is a faithful and forgiving God, and whether in prayer, praise, or petition, his song of worship and thanksgiving testifies of his trust in God and his acknowledgement that God is the Lord, and his hope is in Him alone: "For there is no God like unto our God, nor are there any works that compare with His wonders."

The Lord our God is Almighty, and He is incomparable in wisdom and eternal in graciousness. The superabundance of His mighty works, which are multiplied in magnificence throughout His created universe, unite in a song of praise to lift Him up and declare Him to be God of gods and Lord of lords.

Let us unite our hearts and voices with those that have gone before and be quick to confess: "No one can compare with You among the gods, O Lord our God. Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in praises and working wonders. No one can accomplish Your work, for You alone are worthy of ALL our praise."

My Prayer

Loving Father, there is no one like You, and I praise and worship You for Your love toward me. Help me to tear down any false god or foolish idol that I have created in my own imagination. You alone are worthy of my worship, praise, and thanksgiving. I pray that the rest of my life may be set aside completely for You, in willing obedience and humble devotion, and for Your praise and glory. This I ask in Jesus' name, AMEN.
