What Does Genesis 12:1 Mean?

Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you;

Verse of the Day

Salvation in the Old and New Testaments is always given to the unworthy sinner by God's grace, through faith in His Word. Salvation is a free gift of God's grace, which comes through trusting in the incarnate Word of God Whose shed blood at Calvary paid the full and final penalty for sin: "For without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins."

Abram was called from a world of lost sinners who had turned away from the true and living God, to worship and serve created things rather than the Creator. Humanity had spiralled downward into sordid sin, ungodly practices, and rejection of the Lord: "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities, His eternal power, and His divine nature have been clearly seen and understood from what has been made so that people are without excuse."

But the God of glory called a 75-year-old pagan and childless Gentile who lived in the idolatrous city of Ur (where a moon god was worshipped) to become the Father of a chosen nation. Abram was called to be the vehicle through whom the Saviour of the world would be born, and he answered by believing the Word of the Lord.

God spoke to Abram and said: "Go forth from your country, and from your relative, and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you," and he believed God's Word. Abram heard the Word of the Lord and believed that God would be faithful to fulfil what He had promised. That simple faith of Abram, which trusted in the Word of the Lord, was credited to him for righteousness: "For faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful example of Abram who, by faith in Your Word, has become the biblical example of a man who believed in the Word of the Lord and who simply trusted in the promises of God. Help me to listen to Your voice and faithfully obey Your call, to Your praise and glory. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
