What Does Psalm 37:7 Mean?

Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

Psalm 37:7(NASB)

Verse of the Day

These words of David have been of great comfort to many who have been overwhelmed by the fights and fancies of evildoers who, in comparison with godly man, seem to prosper in the ways of the world. These evildoers can excite envy from those that are seeking to walk in spirit and truth. But we are reminded not to fret or to become perturbed by the actions and attitudes of the wicked who seem to prosper in their wicked ways, for they shall receive their just desserts. Indeed, their apparent successes in life are but a flash in the pan of eternity, for they are like the grass which will soon be nothing more than a fleeting shadow.

The godly are called to trust in the Lord and to hold fast to the faith once offered to the saints, for our hope is in Christ. The believer is called upon to delight in the things of God, for those are the qualities of life that have everlasting joy, eternal purpose, and heavenly rewards. We are to maintain our faith in the power and promises of God, for He will vindicate all His children and His justice will shine as brightly as the noonday sun.

We are to be still in His presence and to patiently wait for the Lord to act on our behalf.

Being still in the presence of God is not a sulky silence or hushed murmuring, but is simply resting in Him, trusting in His Word of truth, abiding in His love, and being content to await His timing. It is to possess a purposeful patience and not to display a glum resignation. When we are quietly resting in His presence and secure in the hope that is set before us, the peace of God which passes understanding will flood the heart and soul of all who walk godly in Christ Jesus.

Let us daily be still in the presence of the LORD as we wait patiently for Him to act. Let us not worry about evil people who prosper nor fret about their wicked schemes for they will eventually be cut off. Indeed, the LORD rescuing the godly from the wicked in His own time and His own way.

So be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for Him to act.

My Prayer

Loving Lord, forgive me for the times that I have allowed the wicked ways of the ungodly to disturb my rest in You. Keep me from anxious thoughts, and may I learn to be still in Your presence, to rest in Your love, and to wait patiently for You to act, knowing that You work all things together for my benefit and for Your glory. In Jesus' name I pray, AMEN.
