What Does Genesis 2:1 Mean?

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts.

Genesis 2:1(NASB)

Verse of the Day

The sublime description of God's supernatural creation in Genesis 1, introduces us to the essential fullness and the almighty power of the triune Godhead Who is seen working in harmony to bring into existence the heavens, the earth, and all that is therein.

The first verse of chapter 2 completes this chronicle of creation which displays the eternal power of the Godhead - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God saw all that He had made and behold, it was very good, and so we read of the evening and the morning of the sixth day, that final day of God's creative control when He made man in His own image and likeness. God created man to have dominion over His creative masterpiece and indeed it was good - it was very good.

"Thus," we read, "the heavens and the earth were completed - and all their hosts." In multiple places in Scripture, these six days of creation are brought to our remembrance. For example, we read in Exodus: "In six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them."

Yes, the first verse of chapter 2 completes the astonishing chronicle of God's creation when the heavens and the earth were completed and all the hosts of heaven and earth were finished - for in God's hands are the depths of the earth, and the peaks of the mountains are His also.

The hosts of heaven would consist of both the sun and the moon together with all the twinkling stars that are set in their courses above. This would also include the hosts of angels, like the heavenly chorus who said on Bethlehem's hillside, "Glory to God the highest," at the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Psalmist rejoiced when he looked at the heavens and considered the work of God's creative fingers. He was filled with awestruck wonderment at the moon and the stars that God had established and set in their places. No surprise that he pondered, "What is man that you are mindful of him?"

The host of earth would compose of plants and trees, herbs and flowers, birds and fish, creeping things and all the great creatures that filled the earth. And man, who was made in the image and likeness of God, would also be part of the host of earth that God created in those six, spectacular days of creation: "Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts - after which God rested on the seventh day."

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, what a wonderful Creator You are Who formed the heavens and the earth and all the hosts of heaven and earth, in six spectacular days of Your creative power. I praise You for the glory of the heavens and the beauty of the earth and thank You that You made man in Your own image and likeness to have dominion over all that You had made. Thank You, Father, that despite the fall of man and our sinful nature, You purposed to redeem us, return us into fellowship with Yourself, and re-establish man’s rule on earth through the shed blood of our God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Thank You that Jesus is the perfect Man Who will rule the earth in righteousness. In Jesus' name, AMEN.
